Bernard Jones is Emeritus Professor at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands His research has covered many areas of astrophysics, both theoretical and observational, with a strong emphasis on cosmology, where he is widely published and cited. He is the author of the recent highly celebrated book Precision Cosmology: the first half million years (CUP 2017) and "The Reinvention of Science: Slaying the Dragons of Dogma and Ignorance", co-authored with Vicent Martinez and Virginia Trimble (World Scientific 2013).
Bernard did his PhD at the Institute of Astronomy in Cambridge (UK) supervised by Dennis Sciama and Martin Rees. He then went on to work as a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton and Berkeley under James Peebles. There followed periods in Queensland, Paris, and Copenhagen before finally settling at the Kapteyn Institute in Groningen, the Netherlands. Bernard has supervised and mentored the research work of over 50 postgraduates from all over the world and is highly regarded as a teacher, lecturer, and presenter of both popular and academic talks.
University of Groningen
Rien van de Weygaert studied astronomy and physics at the University of Leiden, where he obtained his PhD cum laude in 1991 on ‘Voids and the Geometry of Large Scale Structure' (supervised by prof. Bernard Jones, prof. Vincent Icke and prof. P.T. de Zeeuw).
Subsequently, he worked as an NSERC fellow at the Canadian Institute of Astrophysics (CITA) in Toronto, Canada and as a research fellow at the Max Planck Institut for Astrophysik in Garching, Germany before taking up a KNAW fellowship (Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences) at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute at the University of Groningen. Since 2004 he is professor of cosmological structure formation at the Kapteyn Astronomical Instiute.
His research interests concern cosmology, the large-scale Universe and the formation of structure in the Universe, as well as computational geometry and topology and pattern recognition. Within this research interest he has had a particular interest in the formation and dynamics of the Cosmic Web, the complex network of interconnected filamentary galaxy associations that pervades our universe on scales of tens to hundreds of million lightyears, and the existence and evolution of voids, the large near empty regions in between these structures. For the analysis of this structure, he has been working on a diverse array of tools based on Voronoi and Delaunay tessellations and related geometric and topological concepts, finding that they provide a highly versatile means of tracing the complex structures seen in the Universe. Aside from these cosmological concepts, he has also been interested in the history of astronomy, via a research project on world's oldest astronomical and mechanical computer, the Antikythera mechanism from ancient Hellenistic times.

The objective of our research work is to derive the context of sensed physical phenomena and further assess situations that evolve over time in changing contexts, offering a personalized experience to users. As the content and its corresponding context adds value to the raw sensor data so understanding and interpreting the context in relation to sensor information plays an essential role in sensor collection. The thesis discusses application that utilizes sensor data at feature level and domain resources at knowledge level to generate personalized services at an instance of time and extend to enable services aimed at time-series modelling such as Smart City Management, in order to assist intelligent decision making.Artificial Intelligence Software Solution Engineer
